Measure Distance on a Map

MeasureMaps is a free online distance calculator for maps. Search any address, click two or more points, and instantly see the distance between them measured along the shortest Great-circle path. Switch between metric, imperial, and nautical units, and export your route to GeoJSON, KML, CSV, or JSON.

How to measure the distance between two points

Measuring distance takes three clicks:

  • Search for a place, or pan and zoom to your starting location.
  • Select the distance (ruler) tool and click your first point.
  • Click the second point to see the distance between them — keep clicking to measure a multi-segment route, and read the running total as you go.

Kilometers, miles, or nautical miles

Distance measurements support three unit systems, so you can work the way you think. Metric shows meters and kilometers, imperial shows feet and land miles, and nautical shows nautical miles — handy for maritime and aviation planning. Switch units any time from the measurement tool.

Accurate Great-circle distances

Straight lines on a flat map are misleading because they ignore the Earth’s curvature. MeasureMaps draws each segment as a Great-circle arc — the true shortest path across the planet’s surface — so distances and bearings stay realistic even over long spans and at high latitudes.

What you can measure

A map distance calculator is useful for far more than a single line:

  • Straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance between two cities or landmarks.
  • The length of a hiking trail, running loop, or cycling route.
  • Flight distance between airports.
  • The length of a fence line, pipeline, cable run, or property boundary.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the distance between two points on a map?

Select the distance tool, click the first point, then click the second point. MeasureMaps shows the distance instantly. Add more points to measure a multi-stop route and see the total length update as you go.

Is the distance a straight line or along roads?

MeasureMaps measures the Great-circle (as-the-crow-flies) distance along the shortest path across the Earth’s surface, not driving distance along roads. This is ideal for straight-line distance, flight distance, and boundary lengths.

What units can I measure distance in?

Kilometers and meters (metric), miles and feet (imperial), or nautical miles. You can switch units at any time, and the measurement updates immediately.
